Hair Longevity: A New Way of Thinking About Hair Health

Longevity has become one of the most talked-about concepts in modern wellness. Once associated mainly with nutrition, supplements and lifestyle habits, it is now reshaping the way we think about hair health.

Rather than focusing solely on hair growth, hair longevity is about preserving strength, vitality and resilience over time. It shifts the conversation from “how much hair we have” to how well our hair is ageing — and how long it can remain in its best possible condition.

What Hair Longevity Really Involves

Traditionally, signs such as greying, dryness or thinning were seen as the main indicators of ageing hair. In reality, the process begins much deeper. As hair ages, the follicle itself changes, spending longer periods in a resting phase and producing weaker hair fibres. Over time, this leads to hair that feels finer, breaks more easily and grows at a slower rate.

As part of this natural process, the growth phase (anagen) gradually becomes shorter, while the resting phase (telogen) tends to lengthen. As a result, hair spends less time actively growing and more time in dormancy, producing strands that are weaker and slower to regenerate.

At the same time, sebum production naturally declines, meaning the hair receives less of its own protective lubrication. This often leads to hair that feels drier, more fragile and prone to breakage. Pigment production is also affected: melanocytes — the cells responsible for hair colour — become less active over time, contributing to the appearance of grey hair.

This gradual decline is natural, but it is not entirely out of our control. Hair ageing is influenced by a combination of internal and external factors. Hormonal changes, prolonged stress, illness, medication and chronic inflammation can all shorten the follicle’s active growth phase, accelerating visible changes in hair quality.

Supporting Hair for the Long Term

The principle of hair longevity focuses on extending the follicle’s active phase, supporting scalp health and reducing the stressors that disrupt its natural rhythm. Much like modern longevity science aims to help the body function optimally for longer, hair longevity applies the same philosophy to the scalp and hair follicles.

By prioritising prevention, consistency and gentle care, it becomes possible to maintain hair strength, density and resilience over time — not by chasing quick fixes, but by supporting the foundations that allow hair to thrive naturally.

In this context, the choices we make also matter. Supporting hair longevity means opting for solutions that respect the follicle and the scalp, rather than placing them under unnecessary tension or stress.

Temporary, removable hair extensions can offer a conscious alternative, allowing hair to be supported visually while preserving its natural integrity.

At BEHTA LISBON, this balance between confidence and care is central — because protecting the follicle is an essential part of thinking about hair health for the long term.

How to Support Hair Longevity

  • - Prioritise scalp health. A healthy scalp is the foundation for healthy hair. Regular exfoliation, massage, gentle cleansing and the use of targeted products can help to remove build-up, stimulate circulation and create an optimal environment for hair growth.
  • - Nourish from within. A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants provides the building blocks for strong, healthy hair. Consider incorporating foods that support hair health, such as red meat, salmon, eggs, spinach and berries, and consider supplements.
  • - Protect from external stressors. UV rays, pollution and harsh styling practices can all contribute to hair damage and accelerate ageing. Protect hair from the sun, avoid excessive heat styling and choose gentle, non-damaging products.
  • - Embrace gentle care. Be kind to your hair. Avoid harsh chemicals, tight hairstyles and excessive manipulation. Choose gentle, nourishing products and handle your hair with care.
  • - Seek professional guidance. If you have concerns about hair ageing or hair loss, consult a trichologist or dermatologist. They can provide personalised advice and recommend treatments to support hair health.
